Walsingham “Open Spaces for All”
Since the end of the funding from the Countryside Stewardship Scheme back in 2012, many permissive paths around fields are no longer available for walkers.
However the Walsingham Estate and its tenant farmers are keeping five partially permissive routes around Walsingham open allowing local people and visitors to continue to enjoy walking in the wonderful countryside.
Walsingham Development Group has decided to build on this by promoting the five permissive walks for visitors and locals; to encourage people to take advantage of the facilities provided and enjoy the diverse open spaces available.
The original way-marks and materials for the permissive paths were included in the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. The WDG was awarded a grant from the District Council Big Society Fund to work with the farmers who are allowing the continued access by providing the necessary signage.
Walsingham Walks
Walsingham Walks is a series of circular walks exploring the the beautiful countryside around Walsingham. Click on the maps to view and/or print the route guides at home.
The routes include a mix of existing public rights of way, bridleways and footpaths, with some permissive path sections. The Walsingham Estate is pleased to make pathways available for walking, however permissive paths are made available by the landowner and may be closed at any time. It is not intended that the permissive paths become rights of way.
Permissive routes may be shut for short periods at any time to accommodate farming and shooting activity.
- Dogs: under control at all times; look out for livestock; farming and shooting activity may be taking place at any time.
No dogs are allowed on the recreation ground. - Parking: pay and display car parking in Little Walsingham car park, access off Walsingham High Street or Back Lane; pay and display car parking in the Little Walsingham coach park when space available.
- Refreshments: Pubs & cafés in Little Walsingham, Great Walsingham and Houghton St Giles. Farm shop and village convenience store in Little Walsingham.
- Toilets: public WCs open 24 hours in Little Walsingham High Street.
- Picnic spots Picnic tables are situated on a grassy space beside the Mill Car Park. Please dispose of litter in bins, or take away with you. There are attractive picnic places near the fords on the Stiffkey, again please take all your litter away with you.
- Play space Our village playground is next to the Walsingham Village Hall site and the grassy Recreation Ground in Wells Road. As well as play equipment there is a small all-weather surfaced play pitch, a skate ramp and benches.
Open Spaces for All
- Free of charge: the Recreation Ground (play ground, playing field, all weather play pitch, skate ramp, youth shelter), Anglican Shrine Gardens (quiet gardens, seating, access between Knight Street and Common Place), St Seraphim’s Quiet Garden.
- Charges apply: Walsingham Abbey Grounds, Wells & Walsingham Light Railway

In the Sunk Road; in the High Street near the Parish Hall; in the Common Place (outside the Museum); on the approach to the Mill car park; in Great Walsingham near the Ford; in Great Walsingham on the green near St Peter’s. There are benches at intervals along the Pilgrim Way. There are also benches throughout the Abbey Grounds.
