Following the news that the Walsingham Post Office is to close on the 21 May, a possible alternative venue has come forward. Irene Armstrong at the Black Lion has already contacted The Post Office to start the ball rolling.

Speaking to the EDP Irene said, “We are investigating taking on the post office. It is necessary to have one in a village of this size. I’ve had support from the Parish Council and Post Office Ltd seems keen. There is a process which takes 12 weeks and I’m starting that now.”

A spokesman for Post Office Ltd said, “Following the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use, the branch at 31 High Street Walsingham will be closing temporarily. It remains our intention to keep a Post Office service in Walsingham and we are investigating the options available.

Let’s give Irene all the support she needs for this essential village service. In the meantime, the nearest PO are in Wells, Fakenham and Snoring and their opening times are detailed on the ‘Essentials’ section of this site.

We were thrilled when the staff at the Primary School offered to help us find a way to involve the children at Walsingham School in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. We decided to organise a poster competition for the children, to advertise the Big Jubilee Lunch Picnic on Sunday 3rd June in the Abbey Grounds. The children worked very hard to produce their poster designs before the Easter break. The idea was that the winning design would be reproduced as a poster to be displayed around the village. The Diamond Jubilee committee were hugely impressed with all the designs. The standard of both the overall design, and the drawings in them, and the clever use of colour, was so good that we have found it very difficult to choose.

We have chosen one overall winner, this lovely colourful rainbow design by Marchelle Walter, age 9 in Year 5, but we also selected five ‘highly commendeds’…

We have now arranged to display all the children’s entries for all to see and admire, using the window of the Letterbox Shop in the High Street (will be on display soon!). All six of the winning designs will be used as flyers and posters around the village. In the meantime you can preview them here!

In June we are joining the whole country in celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee!

You can download our Diamond jubilee programme

On Saturday 2nd June 2-4pm come to a Crown-Making Workshop with milliner JoJo in the Abbey Crypt. Come and make a special crown to wear at the Big Jubilee Picnic. Adults and children welcome (children under 12 should be accompanied).

On Sunday 3rd June we are holding a BIG JUBILEE PICNIC LUNCH with live music in the grounds of the Abbey, then that evening the Sea Cadets under the command of Canon Beau Brandie (who visit every year for the National Pilgrimage) will perform a mini tattoo and 21 gun salute in Common Place to mark the occasion, with LIGHTING OF THE BEACON on top of the village pump.

On Monday 4th June we are LIGHTING A GIANT BEACON on the Abbey Farm meadows, Sunk Road, as part of the official Diamond Jubilee Beacons, finishing off with FIREWORKS. Official time for our beacon to be lit (from the national organisers) is 10.15pm sharp.

Help wanted: We need donations for our crown-making workshop – any buttons, old jewels and trimmings, ribbon, scraps of fabric, feathers, sequins, coloured card and the like, all gratefully received. Please drop donations at JoJo’s shop on the High Street or to Elaine Carter at Robin Hood Cottage.

Village commemorative mugs are now on sale at the Shirehall Museum shop, priced £6.50. Stocks are limited so we recommend you get yours soon to avoid disappointment. All children of school age in the parishes of Great and Little Walsingham will be receiving a mug as a gift, a great memento of this historic date.

(12A) 105 mins

Meryl Streep is Margaret Thatcher, Jim Broadbent as Denis and Richard E Grant as Heseltine.

“Awards season glory for Streep is a given, but the rest of the cast are hardly slacking: Broadbent adds lashings of pathos; Olivia Colman is an unobtrusive delight as Carol Thatcher (her brother Mark appears only as a child and on the other end of a long-distance phone call); Alexandra Roach plays the young Margaret Thatcher with grace and subtlety; and as Geoffrey Howe, Anthony Head can be sensationally dead-sheep-like when it counts.

Some viewers may be disappointed that a Thatcher biopic lacks an explicit political agenda, but the film succeeds as a drama for that very reason. Lloyd and Morgan have no intention of immortalising their subject: in fact, they do just the opposite, which those with an axe to grind will find even less palatable. They make her fully human. ” Robbie Collins, The Telegraph

BRING CUSHIONS!!!

15 127 mins
“This is a skin-crawlingly atmospheric, uncompromisingly cerebral and austere account of John le Carré’s cold war espionage novel, adapted for the screen by Peter Straughan and the late Bridget O’Connor. Gary Oldman plays the melancholy agent George Smiley, brought out of his humiliating retirement and charged with rooting out a Soviet mole in the upper reaches of the secret service…..

…..This Tinker Tailor is a weightless, slo-mo nightmare taking place in what looks like an aquarium filled with poison gas instead of water: I found it more gripping and involving than any crash-bang action picture, and it is anchored by Gary Oldman’s tragic mandarin, a variation on Alec Guinness which transfers the emphasis away from George Smiley’s wounded feelings to his cool capacity for unconcern in the face of violence, a hint of a daredevil past, long mummified by bureaucratic self-control and a schoolmasterly scorn for his victim’s weakness and disloyalty, while seeing how easily any agent could give the wretched Judas kiss. What a treat this film is, and what an unexpected thrill.” Staring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds.

Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
